It may sound like a cliche and in fact it might be a cliche to say that I have been a " truth seeker" my whole life. Getting to the heart of the matter is another way of putting it. Whatever you call it, finding the truth in any given situation has been the one constant guiding principle of my life. The area of truth that has most intrigued me has been the truth of the human experience. Whether it is, Spiritual, Relationships, Finances, Career or the pursuit of Happiness. It is fascinating to me to discover what is really going on in the human experience.
That makes this month’s topic of the Relationship Alchemy Blog one of great interest to me. Luckily I am not alone. Seeking some kind of truth is also a favorite topic among my coaching circle participants.
Last week in the blog and coaching circle conversations we began the exploration of speaking the truth. In written and verbal form. Both to ourselves and to others. The question that naturally arose was " how do we know what the truth is? ". Many a war has been fought based on one person or one nations " truth”. Religions are formed with this as the centerpiece. This is the truth! Relationships are often dissolved due to one person’s truth outweighing the other person involved.
The subject that had the most juice around it seemed to be knowing what the FEELING of truth was. Our inner feelings based on body sensations are the very best detection system we have. Our minds are not very reliable in this area but our bodies never lie. It seems though that the words that we have for this feeling can be as confusing as they are important to define.
A true good feeling can be confused with the kind of false pleasure that comes from addictions to sex, food, people, religion, reading, ANY kind of pleasure that is dependent on outside stimulation is suspect in my book. The kind of Good Feeling that signals to us a truth has a very particular kind of peace to it. There is no charge, no excitement or negativity. Even when the truth is hard or painful it still Feels Good.
I want to be honest here. I am still figuring out the best way to put this particular truth into understandable language. That said it might just be something that can only be understood on a gut level. There may not actually be language that defines it perfectly.
More important to me is the ongoing conversation that evolves around seeking a truth of this nature.
The kind of truth that frees each and all of us from false thinking, limited beliefs and negative patterns. The kind of truth that brings us to our knees at times or has us shouting praises to the heavens. A truth that; allows for a light to shine even in the darkest times, holds us to our highest purpose during the best of times. That is the kind of truth that is worth a lifetime of exploration in my book.
This week I am going to leave you with a few questions to help you discover your own Good Feeling truth detector. How do you know when you are telling yourself the truth? What does that feel like? What are the signs to you that there is a lie operating in your life? What does that feel like? What is the feeling you get that signals someone is not being truthful? Play with those questions and please let me know what you discover!
